This problem was reported by few Netgear R8000 users and I managed to reproduce it. It’s related to the following code:

Default htmode

The first problem is that even if hardware supports VHT80 it may be not available for every/any current channel. If channel 36 doesn’t support VHT80, for better user experience, it shouldn’t be set in /etc/config/wireless by default. Example:

as you can see, VHT80 isn’t support on any currently available channel due to regulatory limits.

Default channel

Picking channel 36 blindly is a bad idea as it may not be available. In case of phy0/radio0 on Netgear R8000 only available channels are 149+ due to hardware/board design (see ARM: BCM5301X: Set 5 GHz wireless frequency limits on Netgear R8000).

Setup wireless like below. I’ve intentionally left encryption set to “none” for both radio’s for quick testing but i’ve tested with WPA2 CCMP encryption with no change in results.

When booting the freshly installed firmware for the device points a kernel trace for mac80211 and after a few days devices presents other processes being tainted. Sometimes the AP enters a bootloop.

If I disable the wireless interfaces the messages stop. Also sometimes the AP reboot on its own I’m attaching a dmesg I manage so get when the AP reboots.

Context:

I am using one device in AP mode, the other in client mode.
The client uses wpa_supplicant to do background scan to other channels that the data channel.
I am running iperf (UDP) from the AP to the client.

My device is home-made, Cavium development board-based, equipped with Compex WLE350NX.
It works correctly with kernel 3.18 and the 2015 wireless backport.
I updated to kernel 4.9 and the wireless backport 4.19.32-1, the last one from the trunk. (previously I used backport-2017-11-01 with the same result).

I am running wireshark with Airpcap to spy the wireless link.

Problem:

* When the client scans offchannel, it correctly sends nullfunc frames around the offchannel period, with the PM bit set then unset.

* However, during this time, the AP continues to send data to the client.

 

* This results in a lot of lost frames, though I set the powersave buffers to high values on the AP side.

After some research I saw that the same kind of problem was fixed several times(*), but since there where so many changes in the queue management, I cannot really compare his work and the current state of the driver.

Any idea / patch / research directions ?

One of 5 EA3500’s, each at a different site, keeps crashing and restarting. Both 18.06.2 and Snapshot r9614-b614954 are suffering it at this particular site. I could finally keep it booting up after disabling radio1 (5 GHz). Other 4 sites have no trouble with the same system and wireless configuration.

I can pretty much rule out hardware problems. Just boot up Snapshot r9614-b614954 on an EA4500, whose radio1 (5G) worked on another site. It suffers the same infinite crash/restart sequence. At least 3 different devices worked at different locations, but crash only at this one.

Overview

On an Archer C7, configuring an mesh point and an AP on the same radio cause a flood of errors to the log.

The load on the system can become so severe as to lock the user out of the system and pings to be several seconds (yes, not a typo) late
(seen on several builds, my notes identify v17.01.4-219-g796bc21 and v17.01.4-301-g60f8d38 as two of them)

Behavior identified as beginning with git commit 0f17504

  • Build an Archer C7 image off the lede-17.01 branch on or after 0f17504

    mac80211: don't pass the hostapd ctrl iface in adhoc
    
    Passing the ctrl iface to wpa_supplicant will automatically cause wpa_supplicant
    to send "STOP_AP" messages to the hostapd. This breaks the AP interfaces.

I’m using current master branch.

In files/lib/wifi/mac80211.sh there is a function mac80211_generate_mac() that tries to generate mac (BSSID) for interfaces. But the is a problem in design here.

I have two phy devices (2,4 and 5GHz):

I also have 4 interfaces in /etc/config/wireless: 2 for radio0 and 2 for radio1. On every channel one is my private AP, and one is for guests.

Since mac80211.sh knows only about phy itself for phy0 is generates ...:2f:2e for main AP and ...:2f:2f for guest one. On phy1 I see :2f:2f for main and 2f:2e for guest.

Since mac addresses goes to bssid (or hostapd creates mac based on bssid in config) I have problem: different AP have the same BSSID.

In my particular case I was able to run the setup after I manually calculate and set macaddresses in /etc/config/wireless
