I have noticed frequent problems with OpenWrt trunk: about 30% of the time it doesn’t start up correctly (but it seems to boot OK and dmesg messages seem fine), ps shows two dnsmasq/ujail processes (note: I’ve been using ujail for the past 2+ years, without serious problems other than  FS#878 ).

When OpenWrt gets stuck with 2 dnsmasq/ujail processes, invoking logread produces the error: “Failed to find log object: Not found” multiple times. If I kill the ujail/dnsmasq processes OpenWrt will just reboot (!)

I’ve tested this on two different OpenWrt VMs and on two different systems running VBox 5.1 and 5.2 under Ubuntu.

Step 3: Run “/etc/init.d/network reload”. However, netifd failed to bring up the static 6rd tunnel wan6.

Here is the log of netifd from /var/log/messages. From the log, it seems that netifd was trying to bring up wan6 before wan (DHCPv4) went up. See “netifd: Interface ‘wan6’ is setting up now”. Does this matter?

I’ve run an iperf3 test, I have records of automated tests that I run every 2 hours that show the usual performance is 380Mbps to bouygues.iperf.fr, however on 18.06 the max attainable is just over 60Mbps in a single threaded test. I need to go to at least 10 threads to get close to 380Mbps.

I reverted to stock and a 17.01 build to verify that there was no issue with the internet connection here, and they all showed the old behaviour.

This speed is unnafected by flow offload being off or on.

i’m using a mir3g and weekly updating to the latest snapshot but from months i still having the same issue random reboots or in some cases, an amber led and what looks a freeze.

Newifi D1, openwrt trunk, 18.06, etc.

This device can not reboot and there is a patch that can fix this problem.
The official builds don’t include it, so the only way to solve it is to build the firmware by ourselves, which is very inconvenient.

OpenWrt 18.06. does not work on at least some RB45Gs, because the yaffs2-Image for the kernel in

openwrt-18.06.0-ar71xx-mikrotik-nand-large-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

seems to be created with a pagesize of 2048, but my recent RB450G contains a NAND-Chip with a pagesize of 4096 (as displayed by the linux-kernel). Flashing this image onto this chip with “nandwrite -o”, inside function platform_nand_pre_upgrade() in file target/linux/ar71xx/base-files/lib/upgrade/platform.sh, screws up oop-data and renders the kernel-nand-partition unbootable, unreadable, unwritable and even unerasable (at least with “mtd erase”).

See attached File cap1.txt for an installation log. The Installation seemed to work just fine, but the device did not bool any more.
See attached File cap2.txt for a log of a netboot-session after that. The kernel showed up 6 new “Bad eraseblock”s and “mtd erase” did not work any more.
After restoring Mikrotik’s RouterOS to the device with their NetInstall-Application, the “bad eraseblock”s were gone, which prooves, that the NAND-Chip is not really defective and the “Bad eraseblock” are erroneous.

There seem to be RouterBoards with different NAND-Chips around: This page:

states that it is a “Hynix HY27UT084G2A”, but the Linux-Kernel states that
the Chip is from Toshiba. Hence the sysupgrade-procedure should probably prepared
for different yaffs2-page-sizes.

Workaround:

After quite some time, I figures out the following workaround:

  1. Netboot OpenWrt 18-06.
  2. Open the file /lib/upgrade/platform.sh with vi and comment out the nandwrite-call in line 760.
  3. Call sysupgrade as usual –> The Installation will not be bootable, but the kernel-Partition will still be accessable
  4. Netboot OpenWrt 14.07 (because v18.06 lacks yaffs2-kernel-support !)
  5. Manually install the kernel-file with:
mtd erase /dev/mtd5
mkdir /mnt/kernel
mount -t yaffs2 /dev/mtdblock5 /mnt/kernel
cd /mnt/kernel
wget -O kernel http://192.168.88.1:8080/openwrt-18.06.0-ar71xx-mikrotik-vmlinux-lzma.elf

umount /mnt/kernel

With this procedure I got a working installation.

Device: Linksys E1700
Running: Trunk, but also tested positive with 17.01

After rebooting the E1700 router, that has a device connected, whos network card has enery saving activated, the link of the port, that the device is connected to, does not come up.

Tested with a Dell laptop with a Realtek PCIe GBE Familiy Controller, the driver options that needed to be deactivated were “Energy Efficient Ethernet” and “Green Ethernet”.
But the problem also happened with various thin clients and printers.

The log or dmesg does not show anything regarding this.

Internet connection stops working, pinging 8.8.8.8 directly from router doesn’t work. It seems to happen most often after 2 days since booting, but I’m pretty sure it had happened very soon after restarting too (restart was done because of this exact problem). Before it happens, everything works perfectly. Nothing like this happens on stock D-Link firmware.

Steps to reproduce:

configure it the following way (this is exactly all the configuration that was done on the device prior to flashing openwrt):

ifdown wwan and ifup wwan don’t help, same with restarting wwan in luci, output of uqmi -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 –get-data-status is “disconnected”. uqmi -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 –start-network doesn’t help.

I also tried playing with lte_modem_enable gpio. I’ll try this when the bug materializes again.

I don’t know how many can bus devices expect pfifo_fast, rather than noqueue. So far as I can tell the flow dissector doesn’t engage, so no FQ, but can is oft blocking bus so codel can drop more often than pfifo_fast does.

AFAIK Looks like driver issue:
Tx ring full errors with HH5a and it was an ethernet driver issue or something at the time when LEDE on HH5a wasn’t fully compatible with SMP.

ipv6 does not work properly on my Netgear R7800. I am running OpenWrt 18.6.1. The device gets a ipv6 address assigned, but I cannot ping any ipv6 address. Furthermore, I get the following error:

PING google.de (2607:f8b0:4000:817::2003): 56 data bytes
ping6: sendto: Permission denied

After running the command
# tcpdump -i eth0 -vv
for some time, ipv6 connectivity works, I am able to ping an ipv6 address, also pinging from another host and establishing v6 connections is working.
# ping6 google.de
PING google.de (2607:f8b0:4000:817::2003): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 2607:f8b0:4000:817::2003: seq=0 ttl=51 time=118.360 ms
64 bytes from 2607:f8b0:4000:817::2003: seq=1 ttl=51 time=118.626 ms

However, after some time, this is not working anymore and I have to restart the tcpdump command.

This must be a device specific issue, since my other Netgear Router (WNDR3700) running 18.06.1 is working flawlessly.

I am having repeatable issues with LuCI openwrt-18.06, observed on OpenWrt 18.06.1
The network connectivity between WAN and LAN is unstable, every couple of seconds the network stops responding. I can observe it as:
1. ping times: from 1ms to 10ms for devices in the same network as WAN interface
2. the remote desktop freezes and restarts
3. the network speed while copying files is very low (from 1MB/s to 5MB/s).

My configuration:
WAN - static IP
LAN - DHCP server
WLAN - Two WiFi networks.

I have removed all IPv6 system packets, disabled WLAN which did not make any difference, installed factory clean image and still this issue appears.
I am not seeing this issue when the TPLINK device works as the switch (WAN is not plugged, the network goes through LAN ports).
I am able to observe this issue at several devices.

The problem occurs on Netgear WNDR3700v3 USING latest 18.06.

After setting up the router and installing required USB packages then rebooting the router, USB can’t be accessed. USB LED indicator light flickers few times during booting of the router, then shuts off. Using DMESG later I see that USB connects, then suddenly disconnects. The ONLY way to use USB functionality is to DISABLE WIFI.

To simply reproduce the issue, flash openwrt to your wndr3700v3, install required base USB packages.

1.) Disable wifi and find USB devices working normally.
2.) Enable Wifi and find USB devices not working and not being powered. (no led indicator on USB).

Use DMESG to see USB being recognized during boot and then simply later disconnected for no reason whatsoever.

The same issue did occur on 17.01. with the same behavior.

WAN interface of AVM FRITZ!Box 4040 is on eth1. To gain internet connectivity the ISP requires VLAN tagging with ID 7. But while I can send packets through interface eth1, I cannot through eth1.7.

Affected device: https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/avm/avm_fritz_box_4040 Affected versions: All I have tested, that is: 18.06.1 and the snapshot available today.

I haven’t seen any disturbing firewall rules and it still doesn’t work after flushing iptables completely.

Steps to reproduce:

- flash OpenWrt 18.06.1 to FRITZ!Box 4040
- change WAN ifname to eth1.7
- connect WAN port to laptop or monitoring device with Wireshark or similar
- send something via eth1.7, e.g. ping, but dhcp or pppd are sending stuff anyway

What happens:

Monitoring device does not see pings, dhcp, pppoe or other packets that go through eth1.7. It received when sending via eth1 directly (untagged). When sniffing via tcpdump on the router, it looks like the packets are send, but they are actually not going over the wire.

What should happen:

VLAN tagged packets are send properly (so PPPoE discovery succeeds in the end).

If I enable Routing/NAT Offloading (tried both options (software and hardware), it looks that this feature doesn’t allows the VoIP and IPTV traffic to work as it was doing previously.+

I know this is experimental and may be still needs some more testing, etc., but I just wanted to let the developers know about this issue, in case, they haven’t realized it.

Steps to reproduce:
Set up radio 1 and radio 2 with US country codes.
Reboot.
Only the 2.4GHz radio will work.
If you disable the 2.4GHz and reboot, the 5GHz will work.

Any additional info you thinks is important:
Tried all workarounds listed.

However, as I am using ‘sysupgrade -v -n -f /tmp/some_pars.tar.gz /tmp/fw.bin’ the files from some_pars.tar.gz are applied to unmodified system, resulting in inconsistencies.

Doing swapoff before
sysupgrade fixed my problem.

sysupgrade should at least issue an error message, when it does not succeed.
As I suspect, that unsuccessful umount of my block device with swap-file open is the culprit.

The crash will happen with 100% certainty, but what exactly causes the problem is a little hard to say. It looks like large internet frames on WAN interface somehow trigger the error.

The WAN interface (eth.2) is untagged, on the LAN ports besides 1 untagged VLAN, 3 untagged VLANs exist. Only (possibly) relevant extra installed package is ip-tiny; it isn’t used though for any custom configuration though.

I have WRT3200ACM and also EX6150v2 both using openwrt 18.06.01. With their stock firmware, my IOT devices like Mi LED and Wemo will connect just fine. With OpenWrt, some devices just not getting IP from the router/AP. Also, relayd is not working when the main router is using OpenWrt. If I use stock firmware as main AP then all problem solved. Seems like something wrong with OpenWrt’s DHCP system. I have also tried 18.06 version.

Preface:
I have very strange issue with interfaces MTU and it looks to be introduced with newer kernel (4.14).

My network is attached as a png:
1. my ISP uses VDSL, i just have a PPPoE (MTU=1492) on the ethernet interface through the ISP modem
2. all other internal clients and routers interfaces have MTU=1500

Ping from R7800 to 1.1.1.1 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = success
Ping from ArcherC7v2 to R7800 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = success
Ping from PC1 to R7800 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = success
Ping from PC2 to R7800 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = success
Ping from PC1 to 1.1.1.1 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = failure
Ping from PC2 to 1.1.1.1 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = success

Now the fun part:
Ping from PC1 to 1.1.1.1 with 1473 packet size and fragmentation allowed = failure
Ping from PC1 to 1.1.1.1 with 1472 packet size (1492-20) and fragmentation allowed = success

It seems a WDS (4addr) problem combined with PPPoE being at MTU=1492 at this point, but:
Ping from ArcherC7v2 to 1.1.1.1 with 2000 packet size and fragmentation allowed = success

I’ve messed up with MTU on all the interfaces, the only thing that fix the issue is setting the br-lan interface of the R7800 to MTU=1491, as soon as the bridge has MTU>1491 the pings fail.

Device: Netgear WG302v1 ixp4xx
FW: 18.06.1 & 18.06.2

Device problem occurs at boot.
During boot LAN (eth0) become ready (LEDs are lit) and then stop after ~2 or ~3 seconds (LEDs are off).
WAN (radio) interface seems working but Ethernet (eth0) is down.
Impossible to get it up because ifconfig up have no effect.

No packages are installed only stock zImage and Shashfs.

With 18.06.1 (default config, IP after flashing) :
OpenWRT say that ethO is up and ready but eth0 and LEDs are off.
Impossible to reach LuCi or ping a computer with IP 192.168.1.10 (connected through serial console on device)
At boot eth0 stay up sometimes ~ 1 of 20.

With 18.06.2 (default config, IP after flashing) :
It seems there are more information during boot.
Kernel is reporting that br-lan: port 1(eth0) entered disabled stat
ifconfig up/down has no effect.

Step to reproduce:
Flash & boot.

So the firmware knows there is an additional port in the switch, it’s just Luci that does not display it.

Lot of crashes, all does not produce anything on logs (even tried to crank up log levels and saving to USB, to be sure to read last lines logged, but no errors is shown).
After the automatic reboot I can see the message

Crashlog allocated RAM at address 0x3f00000

with logread.
No log file is generated inside

/sys/kernel/debug

.
I compiled a custom image with

/dev/mem

enabled and dumped the memory after 0x3f00000 (basically last MB of ram available) and I can only see the bytes “A1 EE DE AD” followed by ~1KB of “00” and after that probably other programs code.

In this thread there is the full explanation about how this device is currently unstable, and having no logs available makes debugging x10 times harder..

- Steps to reproduce

 I have a large network with arround 200 Virtual Machines connected to the router, this router is great and looks like it can handle all of my VMs easly (my ISP router break after 80VMs) but out of nowhere sometimes the router stop to function, I cannot connect to it from LAN or WLAN. I am not sure if this is related with the VMs or if it is another issue

This bug has been existing as long as the ubiquiti loco xw 5 ghz hardware is around, probably what we are dealing with is a hardware bug in the AR9342 Rev. 2 chip. It is somehow hard to reproduce, but it hits us reliable every couple of hours, sometimes days, running any version of OpenWrt up to todays master branch. It just happened again and this time I decided to check if the bug is actually listed on FS – in addition to creating the usual cron-job executing `iw dev wlan0 scan` every minute. There is even a watchdog in the community libremesh repository designed to catch exactly this bug:

So to run into it, here we got 2 ubiquiti nanobeam m5 devices running OpenWrt ar71xx/generic loco-m-xw pointing at each other over a distance of roughly 2km. This link is acceptable, but not perfect and slightly asymmetric.

Now it so happens that device A (and always only device A!) becomes deaf after some hours of mostly sending lots of traffic to device B. It will continue to send beacons, but loose all associations. device B will keep trying setting up a link, but it keeps ending up in ‘BLOCKED’ state and dumps using a monitor mode interface show that device A simply doesn’t react at all to any of the frames send by device B. A simple `iw dev wlan0 scan` on device A (which doesn’t give any results) fixes the problem.

The channel seems rather unused otherwise and signal quality only varies by weather conditions. Interestingly this seems to happen on non-DFS channels only. And it happens on Ad-Hoc mode (unencrypted, never tried encrypted) and 802.11s (open ie. setup via `iw` tool as well as with SAE ie. running `wpa_supplicant`) equally. It doesn’t happen on all nodes, but only on those with rather bad signal or at least one far-off neighbor.

I saw this occuring on ubnt nanostation loco m5 XW as well as on all nanobeam m5 variants (which is supposedly compatible with the loco-m-xw image).

This results in

./buildtools/bin/waf: binary operator expected

for the target.

The check is flawed in both cases, the host does not check for the custom configure command and the target is doing a file check only, so you have to ensure the actual “configure” argument is first in the CONFIGURE_ARGS.

CONFIGURE_ARGS:=configure $(CONFIGURE_ARGS)

This is confusing and both cases should work similar and check for CONFIGURE_CMD and maybe we should add a CONFIGURE_CMD_ARGS variable, that can hold custom arguments.

Now again but shorter version. The usb-modeswitch (which seems to be an openwrt project, a rewrite of original usb_modeswitch https://git.openwrt.org/project/usbmode.git ) needs to set some devices to config 0 before switching to config 3.

BTW this is fixed in usb-modeswitch... Here is the link to discussion about this:

Some devices need to be set to config 0 first to be able to switch to config 3. Otherwise they hang...

I’m not sure this works in plain openwrt images, but there exists a widely deployed commercial fork of openwrt which is definitely vulnerable to some exploit chain involving this one in the middle.
You could argue that the right of modifying uci config already gives an equivalent authorization level, or this should have been sanitized at user interface. So, is this something you consider safe?
