The tun interface loses its IP address when a network restart (/etc/init.d/network restart) gets issued, if the tun adapter is if referenced in /etc/config/network.
You have to restart the OpenVPN service to reassign an IP address.
This happens on the server as well as on the client side and it can lock yourself out if you are connected via VPN.

Device : Mi router pro R3P
https://openwrt.org/toh/xiaomi/xiaomi_r3p_pro Snapshot firmware because stable firmware isn’t available yet for that specific device.
Seagate 4TB HDD/EXT4/USB3 as source device.

Samba transfer speeds are somehow capped at 50Mbit/sec for wifi transfers. I have tried both samba versions with the same result. I checked the transfer speeds on my oneplus 3 ( which is 1×1 AC, supports max 433Mbit/sec). I checked them on different android phones through wifi, with no change. FTP works fine wirelessly at full speeds on all the devices.

I have firewall, odhcpd and dnsmasq disabled as i use this router as access point. I have the device wired to Archer c7 v4 and the speeds end up being the same 50Mbit/sec wirelessly while wired transfer works fine.

utilising odhcpd for ipv4/6 queries led to uninstalling dnsmsaq from the system and in due course the file /etc/config/dhcp got wiped. Said file however holds the settings for odhcpd as well and thus is expected to be retained.

Since the /etc/config/dhcp holds the settings for both, dnsmasq and odhcpd, it should not be wiped if either packages gets uninstalled.

The following issue occurs on all devices across all OpenWRT versions as it is partly a problem derived from the Linux Kernel.

Prerequisites:

1) You need to have set up a working Wireless access point.
2) The set country has to not be one of the ones patched out here: https://pastebin.com/M2qTQFT5

Steps to reproduce:

1) Type ‘iw reg get’ in the terminal. This will give you a list of all available channels in the regulatory zone (country).
2) Change country to one of the patched out ones: https://pastebin.com/M2qTQFT5 (Eg. Angola, Antarctica)
3) [opt - Disregard this step if you used the WebUI] Type ‘/etc/init.d/network restart’ 4) Type ‘iw reg get’ in the terminal. You will notice that it has not changed.

Problem:

You can, unknown to you, set up a channel which is prohibited in your country. This is very hard to *check* because there is no way to pre-query whether you can set such a country or not.

I’m using igmpproxy for IPTV on openwrt-18.06.2-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr1043nd-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

In the past I’ve been bitten by a version of this bug:

Basically igmpproxy will not always start or continue to work when the wan network does ifup/ifdown.

I solved it with the solution listed there:

That seems like a better default, maybe even restarting on any ifup and not just wan, to make it fullproof against weirder setups with interfaces named differently.

I wrote a bug report but then the bug report said wrong token and I lost the report... :(

Now again but shorter version. The usb-modeswitch (which seems to be an openwrt project, a rewrite of original usb_modeswitch https://git.openwrt.org/project/usbmode.git ) needs to set some devices to config 0 before switching to config 3.

BTW this is fixed in usb-modeswitch... Here is the link to discussion about this:

Some devices need to be set to config 0 first to be able to switch to config 3. Otherwise they hang...

First, I have to say I’m not 100% sure it is something to be addressed within samba package itself, so forgive me if this is something you have already evaluated as not being an issue.

I’m not sure this works in plain openwrt images, but there exists a widely deployed commercial fork of openwrt which is definitely vulnerable to some exploit chain involving this one in the middle.
You could argue that the right of modifying uci config already gives an equivalent authorization level, or this should have been sanitized at user interface. So, is this something you consider safe?

Trying to debug a PPPoE issue it was not possible to utilize –verbose with ifup || ifdown since it would appear not being implemented. Thus started to look at what LuCI has on display when stopping || starting the WAN iface via LuCI:

Whilst USER_REQUEST would seem logical as being manually initiated by the user the Unknown error however led me down the garden path until having traced its source

would not appear to warrant an error tag at all. And the remainder, except 21, would appear to be rather specific than to be labelled as Unknown error.

Perhaps

*) echo "UNKNOWN_ERROR" ;;

is meant to be anything else that is not covered by codes 1 - 21 but that is not how it turns out on (LuCI) display.

I would thus humbly suggest to sort non-errors from actual errors and not tag the Unknown error to any of the specific error codes. It may help others that find themselves in a similar situation.


Whilst not being part of the topic but in a way related perhaps implementing

--verbose

for ifup || ifdown might go a long way in debugging connectivity issues.

When booting the freshly installed firmware for the device points a kernel trace for mac80211 and after a few days devices presents other processes being tainted. Sometimes the AP enters a bootloop.

If I disable the wireless interfaces the messages stop. Also sometimes the AP reboot on its own I’m attaching a dmesg I manage so get when the AP reboots.

However, my macOS-based system doesn’t get IPv6 connectivity. It gets a global IPv6 prefix, which suggests that it’s able to receive RA packets, but my router is also unable to ping6 the macOS system by it’s globally unique address, and doing ip -6 neigh on the router makes it clear that the router doesn’t know the MAC address of the macOS system, and all of it’s probes to find it, end up failing.

Inspecting the ICMPv6 traffic in the LAN shows that my macOS system doesn’t respond to the neighbor solicitation packets send by the router. Here’s an example of such a packet:

Here, fd26:e9f1:e833::1 is the ULA of the LAN interface of the router.

According to Apple discussion board ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8620806 ) macOS seems to have a behaviour such that it ignores neighbor solicitation packets unless the source address of the packet is a link-local address.

Indeed, commenting out option ula_prefix in /etc/config/network makes odhcpd to use link-local addresses, and that makes macOS to respond to neighbor solicitation queries, and in my system, demonstrably restores IPv6 connectivity.

Since macOS is a very common operating system, it would be benefical if odhcpd’s default behaviour were to use LLA in NDP packets. The current situation of not being able to set ULA prefix without losing connectivity is unfortunate. (And I think that ULA prefix is set by default in OpenWRT, which makes macOS not play together with it by default.)

I was using CLAT in an Archer C7 v5 for some testing. Everything worked fine.

I decided then to upgrade to 19.07.1 and everything works fine from the backup that I did from the config, but not the CLAT (464XLAT).

I decided to reflash the unit from scratch and configure everything manually. Same problem, CLAT is not working. I tried even setting the tunnel link to the WAN interface manually in the CLAT interface (advanced settings), instead of the default “unspecified”, played with the firewall settings as well, etc. Nothing resulted.

By the way, even in 18.06.7, which I’m using right now with the CLAT, the CLAT interface doesn’t report any RX/TX or packets. In the same router I’ve installed Collectd and I can see there the traffic being graphed correctly.

So I’m guessing there is some bug there. I’m going to report it as a bug, but just in case someone discovered an easy solution.

I’ve observed that at some point, across numerous tests, a Virtual dynamic interface 464XLAT was created, but it doesn’t allow to edit it, so not sure if this is related. I believe this interface is only created when I’m using PPPoE for the WAN link (I’ve tested 2 scenarios, PPPoE done in the OpenWRT box and PPPoE done in the GPON ONT).

I created the directory manually and the error was gone but the directory remained empty even after disconnecting the log server for 24hrs, no spool files were created nor disk-assisted queue files were created either and as a result when connecting the server back after 24hrs the in-memory queue got sent to the server which equals roughly to 10min worth of logs while the WorkDirectory /var/log/rsyslog remained empty.

I have flashed two versions of OpenWrt v19.07.2, one compiled by myself and the other using the official stable release from the website. On both versions I have then installed the latest version of the LuCI-app-UPnP which includes the miniupnpd daemon.

The problem is UPnP seems to very intermittent of how it picks up the ports from the devices. Some devices and applications show up under the `Active UPnP Redirects` and some don’t at all. My primary testing device is my Sony PS3 and PS4 which requires UPnP to open up ports for an optimal online gaming experience. A common port that I reply on is UDP 3074 that is used by Call of Duty games to achieve open NAT type.

When I was running OpenWrt v18.06.5 at the time in 2019 everything worked perfectly including UPnP. When v19.07.0 was officially released for stable use, I noticed I was getting moderate NAT type within my games. With this in mind I checked the luci-upnp app and noticed that my PS4’s IP address/hostname and the corresponding UDP 3074 was not listed. Sometimes I could get the PS4 to be picked up via the Sony PlayStation network test which would open up UDP port 9308 on LuCI-app-UPnP.

I have opened a couple of OpenWrt forum threads discussing UPnP not working:

The only working version of miniupnpd/luci-app-upnp seems to be miniupnpd 2.1-1 which I have had working on all the v19.07.* firmwares. OpenWrt v19.07.0 shipped with miniupnpd 2.1.20190408-2 and this was the point where it broke. Recently testing with the newer v19.07.2 firmware the miniupnpd has been updated to version 2.1.20191006 and this is the same story whereby the PS3/PS4 can’t be picked up.

Interestingly I did some experimenting and took the files, patches and makefile from the master trunk, replaced `PKG_VERSION:-2.1.20191006` with `PKG_VERSION:-2.1.20200329` in the `makefile` (which is the very latest version of the MiniUPnP daemon source code found at https://miniupnp.tuxfamily.org/files), compiled v19.07.2 and flashed it to my router. I then did a Sony PlayStation network test on my PS4 and UDP port 9308 was listed under `Active UPnP Redirects`. I then proceeded onto Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) and UDP port 3074 also appeared! However, I still had moderate NAT type which meant the firewall wasn’t opening up somewhere. After clicking the `Delete` button on the LuCI UPnP page and opening the port manually on the firewall the game did give me open NAT type as expected. Weirdly though, the UPnP listing came back which has never happened any time I’ve used OpenWrt with manual port forwards. In other words if I open a port manually in the firewall UPnP will never list same port and destination device in the `Active UPnP Redirects` list.

I upgraded to 19.0.7 yesterday. Since I have the follow issue :
all static leases can’t be resolved (25 hosts).

In system.log I found this logs each time I (re)start dnsmasq :

So I patched the init.d/dnsmasq adding this line :

 chmod og+r $HOSTFILE

after the line :

 mv -f $HOSTFILE_TMP $HOSTFILE

in function dnsmasq_start

This patch is operational with those logs :

Hi- I hope everyone is doing well.

We’ve got some builds that use the openwrtorg/rootfs:armvirt-32-19.07.2 Docker image; they run around 1600 UTC each day as well as any time somebody amends a related pull request (normally between 0000 UTC to 1000 UTC, our working day for Perth, Australia).

Occasionally, we get failures due to packages missing in OpenWrt (curiously, it’s usually GCC)- more commonly during our morning.

I _think_ this may be a byproduct of the OpenWrt nightly builds happening and the packages being rebuilt, it may be that https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/19.07.2/packages/arm_cortex-a15_neon-vfpv4/packages/ is the actual build output folder (and so during a build, the contents may change).

I’ve had a look at the timestamps at that URL, I’m not sure what timezone they’re in, but they’re mostly around the 0100 to 0500 range- if this is UTC and my suspicions are correct, then that would definitely cause an increase of this issue during our morning (which is what we see).

I don’t think it’s related to any Docker build cache funniness- we wipe that at 1900 UTC each day.

While you won’t reliably be able to reproduce, here’s a simple test case (requiring Docker for Mac/Windows, or Docker for Linux with docker buildx configured):

- docker run –rm -it openwrtorg/rootfs:armvirt-32-19.07.2 sh
- mkdir /var/lock
- opkg update && opkg install gcc

I’ve attached a log excerpts from our CI system of one such failure.

libnl_tiny stores time() value to sk→s_seq_expect and sk→s_seq_next (struct np_sock sk) in socket.c.
Struct members s_seq_expect and s_seq_next are both unsigned integer values, which I believe is to
overcome Y2038 Problem. Looking at git blame, this particular design choice has been made over 10 years ago.

Since many libraries and OS including gLibc and linux have already redefined time_t to signed 64 bit,
I think it is safe to redefine the members to uint64_t.

As of latest master OpenWRT still does not enable ed25519 by default in dropbear.
ed25519 is becoming fairly widespread and is even the current default key exchange algorithm in OpenSSH.
As per https://github.com/mkj/dropbear/pull/91 adding this feature would only add around 8KB to the build size of dropbear max
and as per your build files 12KB in MIPS.
I believe 10Kb is relatively negligible, even for routers, and as such I don’t really see
any reason to have it disabled by default, especially when something as
crucial as public key ssh gets broken otherwise without any warning, leading to a horrendous UX.

Would you be so kind as to think about changing the default?

validate.c uses inet_pton for identifying IPv6 addresses [1], and this seems to not understand interface identifiers as used for Link-local IPv6 addresses.

Reproduce:

This is a problem practically whenever validata_data is used to check uci values.

For example, it is not possible to use a link-local address for specifying an NTP server:

If ‘server:list(host)’ is changed to ‘server:list(string)’ there, it obviously works fine, as it’s just the validation.

I use the gcc package to compile C code on my OpenWrt installation. Something has broken the toolchain, and it appears to be related to the binutils package that OpenWrt base provides. I receive errors such as these when I compile:

I was able to overcome this problem by updating binutils. I copied the version information and patches for binutils 2.32 from toolchain/binutils/ into package/devel/binutils/, and I built a newer version of the binutils package. Whereas the toolchain version of binutils provides the option to build a recent release, the package version is still 2.27.

The commonly used OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.2 does not report a complete list of clients.

Using snmpd 5.7.3-3 on LEDE 17.01.04, ssh in and display a list of connected clients with iwinfo wlan0 assoclist. To query via SNMP from another machine, use snmpwalk -v2c 172.24.32.15 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.2

mini-snmpd and mini_snmpd both seem to be unavailable as alternatives.

The Device that this problem occurs on is Netgear WNDR3700v3. I’m using 17.01.04 release of openwrt.
Long story made short, the issue is that USB connects, then later in startup of the router it disconnects and when fully booted it can’t be seen using ‘fdisk -l’ nor can it be mounted (/dev/sda1)...

Installed packages are the ones included in the build + usb-core and its dependencies.

To reproduce this issue:

1.Do standard setup the router ( setup wan, setup lan, switch wifi on).
2.Install packages required for usb functionality.
3.Insert usb and reboot.

You will see during boot that usb light flashes few times and then after boot stops flashing/working. That can be confirmed by dmesg.

Here is the log of netifd from /var/log/messages. From the log, it seems that netifd was trying to bring up wan6 before wan (DHCPv4) went up. See “netifd: Interface ‘wan6’ is setting up now”. Does this matter?

Checking into u-boot (make menuconfig) seems that lzma cannot be set , only LZ4 is provided.

Also the option to change compression type of the kernel do not work. I try to switch from default (gzip) to LZ4 but kernel uimage is always lzma compressed.

Could you provide some hint to unlock the situation ?

Another strange things is :

Error: ethernet@f0028000 address not set.
No ethernet found.

f0028000 is memory address of GMAC that is not provided in sama5d31 SoC but the curious is the next No ethernet found.

Does it mean that nor EMAC was found ?

After upgrading my R8000 from Chaos Calmer (15.05.1) to LEDE Reboot (17.01.0-rc2, r3131-42f3c1f), I found that I could no longer get the 5GHz radios to work as before. The 2.4GHz radio is fine.

In CC I was using the following configuration:
- radio0 on channel 149, country code ‘00’, VHT80
- radio2 on channel 48, country code ‘00’, VHT80

The firmware apparently only accepts 00 and US as country codes, which is why I was using 00. This discussed at length in: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=55367&p=19 (and previous pages)

In 17.01.0-rc2, I can’t get radio0 to come up at all. radio2 can be configured, still on channel 48 and country 00, but in VHT40 mode. If I use VHT80, it stays disabled.

This was discussed previously in this forum post: https://forum.lede-project.org/t/r8000-5ghz-wifi-issue/236 and I get the same error messages and channel selection as the OP, so I will not repeat them here.

I’m not sure if this issue is really related to the country code setting, but I will note that the factory system apparently sets the country code to “EU”:

I see that LEDE carries a patch on brcmfmac which translates the configured country code to an internal code for the firmware on this specific model (https://git.lede-project.org/?p=source.git;a=blob_plain;f=package/kernel/mac80211/patches/863-brcmfmac-add-in-driver-tables-with-country-codes.patch;hb=refs/heads/lede-17.01). I’m willing to test patches if anyone knows the right internal country code for Europe.

I’ve already talked to blogic about this issue. He asked me to perform some tests on the platform even back to openwrt CC.

The bug in question occurs with the MT7628 chip and the I2C bus (WRTNode 2p board).
Configuring the pinmux and enabling the driver, the kernel correctly sees the i2c bus. But then going to use the “i2cdetect” command from i2c-tools package has a surprising result: devices are actually sees devices that are not connected.

Curious about the problem I connected my DSO and I did the probe of the SDA and SCL pins. Data and clock seem to be transferred correctly. So the problem seems to be in the “reading”.

According to the i2c specification if SDA is pull-low and you do an i2cdetect the system should identify in the bus an ACK for each slave address, this does does not happen and the same list appear again.

Turning back to different versions this still happens, unfortunately I have not been able to test every single commit.
The test I’ve made:

  • Openwrt CC the device was not supported.
  • Openwrt first commit of the device support: the i2c bus was not recognized by the driver.
  • Openwrt trunk, the i2c bus is not registered
  • LEDE 12.01 the problem as described above.
  • LEDE HEAD: the problem as described above.
  • LEDE HEAD 4.9 (kernel): The problem as described above.

I am seeing ~10ms latency spikes for traffic through the device and I believe these errors are the reason. If I force the scheduler to only run the CPU at its maximum speed with the command below then then errors cease and the latency spikes disappear:

I looked into the kernel sources and the messages above appear to be saying that there was an error when asking the Pi firmware to change the CPU speed.

I know there is a HW quirk in the RPi3 which means the UART is effected by the CPU speed. I wonder whether this has anything to do with the firmware rejecting the speed change:
