Software versions of OpenWrt/LEDE release: OpenWRT 19.07.3 Stable (r11063-85e04e9f46 / LuCI openwrt-19.07 branch git-20.136.49537-fb2f363)
Package: wpad-openssl OR hostapd-openssl

External server/service

RADIUS server: Windows Server 2019 NPAS, worked fine with WPA2-EAP

Client

Client WIFI chip and driver: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 running newest driver version 20.70.16.4 (driver date: 01/01/2020)

Steps to reproduce:

1. initialize default settings, then remove wpad-basic and install wpad-openssl OR hostapd-openssl to enable WPA3 AP mode
2. leave 802.11w to default setting which is “Required” 3. set country setting, ssid, and etc. as required such as radius for EAP
4 if use WPA2-PSK or WPA2-EAP with default settings, everything works fine.

5. switch WIFI (AC/N) to WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE mixed mode (sae+ccmp or something like that) OR WPA2-EAP/WPA3-EAP mixed mode (wpa3-mixed+ccmp or something like that)
6. apply settings wait until effective or reboot to take effect

6.1 __ssid won't come up on 802.11g/n interface__ if in PSK/SAE mixed mode.

7. Client (Intel 8265) won’t be able to connect to SSID,

7.1 if ssid would come up (802.11a/ac), it would be seen on client scan, but the client (Intel 8265) won't be able to connect to SSID, reports "Can't connect", in EAP mode, router side log "Deauthenticated due to local request" after "EAP-SUCCESS"

8. switch 802.11w to other settings, including “Optional”, problem remains, router config file /etc/config/wireless would list “option ieee80211w ‘1’” 9. switch 802.11w to other settings, including “Optional”, problem still remains, router config file /etc/config/wireless will be missing the “option ieee80211w” completely, and it seems wpad or hostapd would assume “optional” (code ‘1’) as default value instead of the documented “disabled” (code ‘0’).

Steps to workaround:

Manually set “option ieee80211w ‘0’” in /etc/config/wireless to disable 802.11w and don’t update settings through LUCI on the problematic ssid, restart wifi. Everything would work.

Install luci-ssl. It will configure uhttpd to listen on port 443 and redirect http to https. In particular, it will add to /etc/config/uhttpd:

 option redirect_https '1'

However, the semantics of this redirect are wrong if a non-self-signed certificate is used.

In particular, it is now a boolean option, and always gets the redirect target from the Host: header. That is, it redirects http://192.168.1.1/ to https://192.168.1.1/, and, assuming that openwrt.mydomain.ru resolves to 192.168.1.1, it will also redirect http://openwrt.mydomain.ru/ to https://openwrt.mydomain.ru/.

What I want is a string option that specifies the domain for redirects. I.e., I should be able to set something like this:

 option redirect_https_domain 'openwrt.mydomain.ru'

and then both http://192.168.1.1/ and http://openwrt.mydomain.ru/ and http://anything.that.resolves.to.192.168.1.1.com/ should redirect to https://openwrt.mydomain.ru/.

- Steps to reproduce -
Boot OpenWRT as per the instructions at OpenWRT QEMU Documentation on an arm64 virtual machine.

 

When hosted in a QEMU virtual machine on arm64 (aarch64), OpenWRT is unable to shut down.
QEMU supports two shutdown methods on arm64, ACPI and QEMU Guest Agent

ACPI on arm64 requires UEFI support, which is not enabled in the armvirt-64 kernel.

QEMU Guest Agent has a package for OpenWRT but the package is broken due to the base implementation of OpenWRT.
QEMU Guest Agent forks a process that calls /sbin/shutdown with several flags when ordered to shut down.
/sbin/shutdown does not exist in the base system.
The flags passed are not compatible with /sbin/poweroff.

This is solved with a simple script:
/sbin/shutdown:

Ideally support for armvirt-64 should move to uefi, since that is the expected supported method of booting a arm64 virtual machine.
This would require the addition of CONFIG_EFI_STUB to the armvirt-64 kernel config.
It would also require changing the armvirt-64 packaging to include the kernel efi image in the root file system, and/or add a bootloader such as grub.

The exact hardware is a Supermicro SYS-5018D-FN8T, 32GB of DRAM, 512GB of NVMe.

I built a new master today (8d2c031f) and scp’d it onto /tmp/ of my router. Then did a “sysupgrade /tmp/...” of that:

Hello there,
I just upgraded my perfectly working TP-Link TL-WDR4900 v1 from LEDE 17 to the latest OpenWRT firmware available: 19.07.03

Unfortunately now, some WiFi 2.4GHz clients got stuck on wifi, they cannot even ping the router, the only way to fix it is to manually disconnect and reconnect them.

Device problem occurs on: Netgear R7800, LinksysWRT1900ACSv2, Netgear EX6400, TP-Link Archer C60
Software versions of OpenWrt/LEDE: v19.07.3 and master

Steps to reproduce: I created a post here https://forum.openwrt.org/t/wrt1900acsv2-only-one-wifi-radio-is-staying-up/64273 regarding the last WiFi client disconnecting from the AP stops working on that radio.

If I go into ‘Network > Wireless’ in LuCI and click the ‘Restart’ button on the 2.4 or 5GHz radio, that radio is the only radio that stays working, whereas the other radio says disabled and wireless not associated.

I can also replicate this via SSH/CLI running `wifi up radio0` disables radio1. Running `wifi up` brings radio1 up this but drops radio0. If I run `wifi up` a second time both radios come back up.

My forum has been linked to a Netgear 7800 thread found here https://forum.openwrt.org/t/netgear-r7800-exploration-ipq8065-qca9984/285/2259 and there has been confirmation that there appears to be a problem with commit `b551660` from May 4, 2020 for `openwrt/package/kernel/mac80211/files/lib/netifd/wireless/mac80211.sh`. Rolling back to commit `0495324` appears to fix this issue.

I too can confirm this by renaming `mac80211.sh` to `mac80211.sh.old`, downloading commit `0495324`, placing it under `/lib/netifd/wireless`, setting the permissions to `0755` and then running `wifi up radio0` in SSH/CLI. Radio0 (5GHz) drops as expected and after a couple of seconds it is back up all without affecting the radio1 (2.4GHz).

As a consequence I also cannot use WPA3 which requires 802.11w Management Frame Protection to be enabled.

With ModemManager the connection to my Private APN works as expected, so no fault on ISP side.
With crosscompile Quectel-cm to OpenWRT, the connection with qmi protocol to my Private APN works as expected, so no fault on ISP side.

I was having trouble building uClibc++ in Openwrt. I figured out that the problem was that the LIBSUP_DEP variable, which is a filename that gets created during the build, was too long for my file system. The name generated was over 150 char long and my fs has a limit of 143. I guess this because I have an encrypted homedir. Anyway, I analyzed the build system of uClibc++, and it seems to vary with the file location for libsupc++.a which is used to extract a bunch of symbols and create the static lib.

I had configured my build to build for a Turris Omnia.

Software versions: master branch of OpenWrt

Steps to reproduce:
1. Configure to build image for Turris Omnia.
2. Build with: `make package/libs/uclibc++/compile -j1 V=sc`

My proposed fix: https://bugs.busybox.net/show_bug.cgi?id=12951

If this patch get’s accepted upstream, we should add a patch to package/libs/uclibc++/patches/ for this.

Just install and compare the time from “Status → Overview” to “System → system” The time on the overview page will always be 4 hours ahead, it doesn’t matter what timezone is selected.

I tried “date -k” to update the kernel time and it has no effect at all.

I used the date command to set the kernel time and date correctly for my timezone (UTC-4) and there is still a time disparity. The kernel time is now correct but the local time isn’t example: overview page time is 07:34:14 local time will be 03:34:14.

After reboot only the power light flashes white and it becomes unreachable.

This is the case with release 19. If it was the same with 18 I don’t remember.

The solution for now is upgrade via tftp with factory image but that makes restoring not easy because of lost settings and changed ip address.

This means that when you go to build them, the system stops and asks you what to do (y/n/number), with an interactive prompt.

The x86 kernel config problem is already fixed by my PR, this bug report is about the build bot problem. They “failed to fail”.

The build bots should have detected this interactive prompt and failed the build.

They were instead “answering” the interactive prompt with an error message, then they could still compile the kernel.

Today I’ve upgraded from OpenWrt 19.07.1 to 19.07.3 and noticed that latency for my WDR3600 router has increased more than threefold.

In OpenWrt 19.07.1 ping from my PC to the router (connected via a 1Gb wired connection, less than a meter) took approximately 0.250ms

In OpenWrt 19.07.3 ping is now 0.860ms on average.

I haven’t changed any settings after upgrading to OpenWrt 19.07.3.

This is quite a serious performance regression.

When I was carrying out the tests I had zero load and zero Internet traffic, so the router CPU was completely idle.

The Archer C9 is the only device doing any NAT on the network and is the only DHCP service on the network. To get around the fact that BCM4360 has no drivers I installed a WiFi Dongle. The Archer C9 is the gateway to the internet.

Sometimes any device at random when connecting to the gateway will be unable to acquire an IP Address despite the fact that the system log clearly shows it offered an IP address to a device with the same mac address. There’s a definite working physical link between the device and gateway. Connecting to alternative ‘dumb APs’ on the same network as the gateway results in the same problem; Unable to acquire an IP address. Asking the device’s DHCP client to renew the address does not help.

I have always experienced this problem with this router when using any non stock firmware (I.E all builds of DD-WRT that I tried seemed to exhibit the same behavior) otherwise I would have said it was a problem specific to only this hardware. If left long enough (Several hours) eventually the device will receive it’s an IP address again. Stock firmware did not once exhibit this behavior in the 2 years+ I had it running.

Eventually I set the device’s IP address manually to the exact IP Address being offered by the DHCP server. The device was still unable to ping the gateway.
I then tried to set the device’s IP address to a random IP address (within the range of IP addresses the DHCP server could potentially serve) The device was still unable to ping the gateway. Finally I set the device IP address outside of the range being offered by the DHCP server and then it was able to communicate with the gateway.

I have attached the system log of when a device failed to acquire an IP address. I have replaced all mac addresses and IP addresses with randomly generated mac addresses and IP addresses. ‘1b:ac:8b:93:55:ba’ is the device struggling to acquire the IP address. It is a MacBook Pro. If memory serves correctly devices requesting an IP address in the same time period will also fail to acquire a IP address from the DHCP server, further testing is required for me to prove that though. Other services including NAT translation for pre-allocated devices appears to behave as expected. The gateway will function as expected in every other way. The log will show me successfully logging via my Android device during the time it was happening.

Steps to reproduce:

- Install wpad-openssl
- Configure network to broadcast in WPA3/WPA2 Personal (sae-mixed)

Devices previously able to connect to WPA2 mode:
- 2012 Macbook Pro on macOS Catalina 10.15.4
- Up-to-date raspberry pi 4 on raspbian buster

If I switch the radio to WPA2 Personal only (wpa-psk if not using luci, I believe), they can connect. I switch it back to WPA3/WPA2 Personal (sae-mixed) they cannot connect. Let me know what logs to gather and how to gather them. If it’s a client issue, please confirm, but my understanding is that mixed mode should support all WPA2 Personal compatible devices.

The base-files package installs a stub /etc/fstab file. However the file is not marked as configuration file and gets overridden on every package upgrade. At the same time the package provides no scripts to fill this file with any actual contents. I can remember that previously the file was a symlink to /tmp/fstab and there was an init script that creates the /tmp/fstab file based on /etc/config/fstab but it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore for the latest trunk. The file is quite handy as a short-hand for mount command (or as a configuration file for my custom cryptsetup script along with /etc/crypttab). I suggest to add the file into Package/base-files/conffiles.

Unless I missing something, it’s seems like currently armvirt images is missing virtio drivers (unlike x86 images) and UEFI support (again, unlike x86 images).

To get idea regarding virtio drivers, please take a look at x86 config and armvirt config:

As you can see, x86 config include all sorts of virtio drivers, such as virtio_blk, virtio_baloon, virtio_pci, scsi_virtio (and so on) while arm config doesn’t have any of these. In result armvirt64 does not boot - it can not mount rootfs, and no block devices is detected by the kernel due to missing block device drivers.

Another roadblock is missing UEFI support in armvirt images. By default virt-manager create virtual machine with ACPI and OVMF, and OVMF obviously can’t boot anything from ext4 images. It possible to workaround this by specifying path to kernel and initramfs in vm properties and editing vm xml manually via “virsh edit vmname” (remove loader and nvram tags in os section and remove acpi tag in features section) but then vm kernel won’t be able to boot due to missing drivers.

To reproduce this issue you need board running fresh Debian or Ubuntu, installed libvirt-daemon-system qemu-kvm ovmf ipxe-qemu, and ability to connect to such board from virt-manager (running on other PC for convinience).
Be aware that big.LITTLE architecture is not supported yet by libvirt, but there is plenty of boards that have four same cores - even simple RPi3B would be enough.

I have both native IPv6 (wan_6 virtual interface from pppoe) and 6to4. I need 6to4 to connect to other 6to4 peers which is faster than native IPv6 (and sometimes native IPv6 cannot reach 6to4). /var/etc/miniupnpd.conf generated by /etc/init.d/miniupnpd uses 6to4 instead of native IPv6, the file contains the following lines

ext_ifname6=6to4-wan6

I think it’s better to use native IPv6 interface by default.
Additionally, is it possible to add ipv6_disable option to the config? Buggy UPnP clients sometimes put IPv6 address in a IPv4 port mapping request, I’d like to check if disabling IPv6 UPnP would fix it, this problem is mentioned in https://github.com/miniupnp/miniupnp/issues/408

The timestamps show different times because I was trying to reproduce it with something as close as possible to a fresh flashing and I couldn’t access both devices at the same time as routers. But I have actually reproduced this making both devices capture traffic at the same time after messing a bit with their network configurations.

Hello,

I have a Xiaomi 3G router. Since the day I bought it I installed Openwrt and to tell you the truth, with version 18.06 I didn’t have any problem.

A few weeks ago I updated to the new version (19.07) using LuCI and it restarts me randomly.

I tried restoring the router, reinstalling the update and it keeps randomly rebooting. Right now I have it without any additional packages installed and it still keeps rebooting randomly.

I have noticed, that almost every time I see a reboot and look at the log file the first thing that appears is this, that is, the first line after the reboot is:

I compile my image according to the given guide: https://openwrt.org/toh/sinovoip/sinovoip_banana_pi_r2

With kernel version 4.19 everything went smooth (OpenWrt Snapshot shown after boot was r12726-92616c4227).

Then i wanted to upgrade to the current master and after applying the new bpi_bananapi-r2-kernel.bin and root.squashfs files the boot process stops every time at the same point (see attached file boot.txt).

I did the follwing steps:

  1. ./scripts/feeds update -a
  2. ./scripts/feeds install -a
  3. make -j8 menuconfig
  4. follow instructions for menuconfig on guide
  5. make -j8 kernel_menuconfig
  6. follow instructions for kernel_menuconfig on guide
  7. I did not apply the patch that was given. I didn’t encounter any problems with failing network connections even with the old linux kernel. It also does not make any difference according to the current problem.
  8. make -j8
  9. changed repositories.conf according to the guide
  10. make image PROFILE=bpi_bananapi-r2
  11. apply new kernel-file and rootfs according to the guide

I tried this several times with different configurations but the result was the same anyway.

It seems like there is a bug at loading rootfs from MTD.

all static leases can’t be resolved (25 hosts).

In system.log I found this logs each time I (re)start dnsmasq :

So I patched the init.d/dnsmasq adding this line :

 chmod og+r $HOSTFILE

after the line :

 mv -f $HOSTFILE_TMP $HOSTFILE

in function dnsmasq_start

This patch is operational with those logs :

Steps to reproduce:
With the OOB configuration it is not possible to receive any traffic on the WAN Port (Interface eth0) if the other device is only supporting 100Mbit. (Like a lot of modems do)

There are now several threads in the forum which describe this.

Possible solution might be to compare the dts file from Netgear R7800 for initializing the MACs. The two devices are very similar and maybe someone with knowledge see a possible problem.

It used to work with OpenWrt and Linux kernel 4.19, but it breaks when switched to 5.4.

In dmesg, you get errors like

Steps to reproduce

  1. Modify KERNEL_PATCHVER=5.4 in target/linux/bcm27xx/Makefile to KERNEL_PATCHVER=4.19
  2. Append dtoverlay=dwc2 to target/linux/bcm27xx/image/config.txt
  3. Build the image with kernel module package kmod-usb-dwc2 and kmod-usb-gadget-eth selected
  4. Flash the image to SD card for Pi
  5. Connect Pi’s USB-C to a Windows computer (or VM)
  6. Connect to Pi’s console through Ethernet or UART
  7. Run following commands
    modprobe g_ether
    uci set network.lan.ifname='eth0 usb0'
    uci commit network
    /etc/init.d/network restart
  8. Install RNDIS driver provided in headless Pi Zero tutorial
  9. You should now have a working USB Pi network adapter
  10. Now revert the change from step 1 and run the whole thing again, instead of a working network adapter, Windows will report error initializing the interface.

Note

g_ether will run CDC-ECM when connected to Linux/macOS, not RNDIS.

I am using a Netgear R6220 router. My router has one “bad erase block”

Every test is done with default settings. For me it is easier to debug this issue with openwrt in station mode, but it applies to AccessPoint/Master as well.

  • 2.4 GHz WIFI operation as expected
  • 5 GHz WIFI only affected
  • low throughput only in openwrt TX direction / openwrt RX direction OK
  • things got much worse with openwrt 19.07.02 → openwrt 18.06.08 was better
    This is why I suspect that it is related to FS#1926 - MTD partition offset not correctly mapped when bad eraseblocks present.
    This fix has been integrated in 19.07. I don’t want to revert this change, as this is the first version openwrt sets the correct MAC address.

Comarison of OpenWrt 18.06.08 and 19.07.02

  • OpenWrt 18.06.08: TX Power is set to 3dBm
  • OpenWrt 19.07.02: TX Power is set to 20dBm (default?)
  • In both cases/logs The “HT Mode is VHT80”
  • Changing the TX Power in 19.07.02 has no effect
    Resource is busy

My guess/conclusion is that

  • the calibration data is not taken into account (maybe it was never and openwrt 18.06 was just lucky)
  • The offset to read the calibration data has changed with openwrt 19.07.02. This is why things got worse (for me)

Attached is the mtd4.bin (factory). I don’t know if this helps for this issue.

I have a TP-Link Archer C7 v5 (ath79/generic) running OpenWrt 19.07.2 r10947-65030d81f3 and periodically one of my hosts sends out a long-running flood (10/sec) of MPCP Pause frames. The AR8337 switch is configured to honor these frames on port 0 (CPU), and other ports, so stops switching frames essentially forever.

There is no way exposed to user to disable flow control.

Flow control should be turned off unless explicitly requested by the user (e.g., they are in a Datacenter/Enterprise environment and/or doing Fibre Channel over Ethernet). This is exactly the opposite of how it currently is with the added benefit that the user cannot change the behavior.

Here’s a tool that will helpfully generate MPCP Pause frames:

You can use this to bring down your network indefinitely. Additionally, since the AR8337 switch consumes these frames you will not be able to see them from the OpenWRT host.

    • in problem state it lists one interface (the 5 GHz wireless NIC)
    • in good state it lists two interfaces (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless NIC)

conclusion

I think it has either to do with ramips: mt7621: switch kernel version to 5.4 or with ramips: mt7621: update PCIe node in dtsi. Between the known good and earliest known bad commit are multiple commits working together. I fear to test them one by one.
