I have been testing OpenWRT 21.02-RC1 stock released firmware image on the Newifi-D2 target (MT7621 based).

Sporadically while using the router, i experience the WAN interface crashing with NETDEV WATCHDOG errors.

I am using the released image for OpenWrt 21.02-rc1 for the Newifi-D2 target
I have also experienced this fault with a custom router build based on MT7621 for a different target, the fault appears general to MT7621 not this target.

I have loaded 19.07.7 stock firmware on this same hardware and the fault does not occur in that firmware version. A colleague has replicated this fault in 21.02-RC1 with the same type of target (physically different unit), but in a different environment with no shared network resources.

Other than setting up the wifi ssid and password and enabling the 5ghz radio, the network settings are stock.

I have worked out a 90% reliable test case to reproduce the fault:

Have a client device connected to the router on WiFi 5ghz
And a local Iperf3 server running on the wan side of the wired interface.

On the server run:

iperf3 -s

Note the servers IP address

On the client run:

iperf3 -c <serverIP> -P 50

Notes:
Iperf3 server needs to be local on a 1gbps wired link. With an internet based Iperf3 server (or one with a slower connection) the error is much harder to trigger, it will happen but its much more random.
The number of connections does not need to be 50, however, the lower the number of connections the less reliable the error triggers.
The WiFi client should be getting about 300-400mbps throughput over the wifi link when its working correctly.

On most runs, the iperf3 performance will drop to 0mbps, logread on the router then reveals:

Upgrade go OpenWrt 21.02.1-rc1 without saving previous configs (otherwise system will become unstable immediately after upgrade). Turn on Wireless in Network–>Wireless–>.... After this a device becomes unstable and completely unusable starting to reboot again and again.

Summary

The WiFi driver crashes on an MT7621 router running OpenWRT21.02rc1 (5 commits further to be exact 6f053e5b).
The router used is an InvizBox Go (WiFi only) i.e. MT7621 + MT7603E (not supported by OpenWRT just yet - I’m working on getting there). I don’t believe the issue is specific to that hardware though.

The crash seems to happen in AP/STA mode when an AP gets added to the configuration and the STA was connected (I’ll add more information if I come across more scenarios). I’m not able to reproduce consistently at the moment.
Once crashed the WiFi stack is not usable anymore until a reboot. Following a reboot, things are back to normal.

Steps to reproduce

The following steps do not necessarily lead to the crash. I expect them to be what leads to it but am still unsure. The stack may show the way to a better reproduction scenario...

On an MT7621 router setup as AP/STA, add a second AP and possibly a third one.
Call /etc/init.d/network reload after each change

Current behaviour

Crash stack is visible in console/dmesg and the STA fails to reconnect (which also leads all APs to become not accessible - expected).

Expected behaviour

No crash

Notes This crash was also observed on builds before the rc1 tag. I don’t know the conditions leading to these crashes.

I’m using a WRT3200ACM, one partition is OpenWRT 19.07.7 and works perfectly. The other has been flashed to 21.*(all three candidates and a snapshot tried) and when I connect to my wifi router thru the Network»Wireless»Scan Luci page the whole router becomes unresponsive(Luci and SSH). I manually cleared the configuration by using the button in the back. Then I can SSH and reboot to the first partition (I find that switching it three times doesn’t always work). I’m not sure the logs that’ll you’ll need but send the code and I’ll return the results ASAP.

PS I’ve also tried disabling 802.11w with the same results.

I saw the announcement on the website about the next stable release so like an idiot I went to upgrade the firmware. Router never came back, left it on overnight to see if it would eventually come up. I was upgrading from 19.07.7.

Breaking open the case I see a UART header and some pads for a JTAG but I’m not the guy to debug what broke. I just wanted to give someone else a heads up so they don’t lose their router, too.

The debricking guide is some random notes for people who jump into the hardware, not really organized in any understandable way.

I like the line “The usual recovery methods have failed, forceing the user to to go to JTAG.” Like, where are the usual recovery methods listed? Not in the debricking guide, they aren’t.

Sorry, it’s just frustrating for a somewhat literate user like me (coming from LEDE, 20-ish years in IT/networking/sysadmin crap) that the debricking guide is useless for me. No “here’s the steps the OS takes to initialize” and “here’s where a safemode kicks in where you can set some TFTP or here’s where you pop into the serial connection via PuTTY” or like a general list of steps in order that you can attempt before working up to “ok solder a JTAG connector, here’s a DIGIKey part number to get you started.”

Tried Failsafe, Factory Reset, and Recovery all with no dice.

Observation: when a wifi client disconnects that appears to see the AP with low signal strength, the whole AP goes down. Verified with airmon/tcpdump that AP beacons stop. Reboot of the router also observed when log_level set to 2 or lower.

Bisecting, commit https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=commit;h=a078037ace50 (v21.02.0-rc3-35-ga078037ace) seems to be the issue:

    mac80211: improve rate control performance

    Call rate control handler after intermediate queueuing
    Includes follow-up fixes

Test case:

1. Connect to AP
2. Move far away or shield mobile so the AP signal drops significantly as seen by mobile
3. Viewing the wifi networks of the mobile (android), if when signal drops below some threshold:
4.1 AP disappears from list: FAIL [the router also reboots]
4.2 AP moves from “Connected” to “Saved”: PASS

I did not have these issues at all in May 2021 using the dev snapshot. I updated to the July 2021 dev snapshot, observed the issue, then built openwrt-21.02 and still observed the issue.

  • My desktop machine and all my several laptops works good with my ISP (connecting to is directly by cable).
  • RT-AC85P with stock firmware works good with my ISP; it is getting network config from ISP.

I made a call to my ISP support informing them my router not able to get network config on what they answered “my router doesn’t sends its MAC address”.

System is configured as a simple router with the e1000e NIC as WAN and a skge NIC [Ethernet controller [0200]: D-Link System Inc Gigabit Ethernet Adapter [1186:4c00] (rev 11)] as LAN.
When doing a speedtest through the router (bredbandskollen.se) the hang occurs during the upload test (when the e1000e NIC sends data and the skge NIC receives data). The download test does not cause the error.

Device the problem occurs on: Asus RT-N56U.

Software versions of OpenWrt/LEDE release, packages, etc.: the latest version of OpenWrt to date, 21.02.1. The previous one, OpenWrt 21.02, suffers from this problem as well. All packages are on their default versions for this releases, nothing has been updated.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install OpenWrt 21.02.1 on Asus RT-N56U (version A1).
2. Either load the router with some heavy task or wait a day or so. In my case the router reboots when I’m trying to download a big file (e.g game or film) on the speed of 200 Mbits (which is the speed of my internet connection). Or it reboots randomly after somewhere like 24 hours of uptime. The best uptime I’ve got on this version of firmware was around 48 hours, so only 2 days.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to provide logs, as they are erased every time the router reboots, which happens exactly after the problem occurs. However, I might try to set up persistent logging, if it’s necessary.

Workaround: use OpenWrt 19.07, the oldstable version. The latest version at the moment is 19.07.8. I moved here from 21.02 and everything works fine so far. I had also used it for 1.5 years before 21.02 released, and had a very solid uptime then. Even if it has ever crashed, it was such a rare occurence I don’t remember it at all.

I hadn’t updated my VM in a while, so sorry for finding this so late.

I have a VM on Hyper-V Server 2019 that had been running OpenWrt 21.02 RC3 on x86_64 with EFI and using squashfs as the rootfs type in a generation 2 (EFI-supporting) Hyper-V VM, and recently I tried updating to a build of 21.02.1. Very early in boot (after Grub, while OpenWrt is booting) it just reboots, and keeps doing this repeatedly. I tried to watch for any error message flashing on the screen just before the reboot, but I couldn’t spot anything, and also the failsafe option from the boot menu doesn’t help.

I’ve tested this with a fresh clean install without my configs on a new virtual hard drive, and the problem still occurs. Other than my own build of 21.02.1, I’ve found it happens on the official builds, too. I checkpointed the VM and started testing official builds, finding that it started with 21.02 release (RC4 was fine) and it continues through to 21.02.1 and also a snapshot build from master that I tried.

I skimmed through the few commits between RC4 and 21.02 release and found this commit affecting x86_64:

According to the hardware support list, D-link DIR-885L HW A1 is supported, therefore, I have acquired one in China, it clearly stated the HW revision is A1 but its WIFI is not supported with the original firmware 19.07.1

after I flashed the firmware in discovery mode , the wireless tab is not shown in the system. Checked wifi configuration and the file was empty. I found there’s another driver for A2 hardware in the product page, I downloaded it, put it in the designated directory, restarted the router and my wifi appears.

but the driver doesn’t work well. The 2.4g (radio0) can not be started most of the time, some time I alter the configuration of radio0 might bring it up, but even I’ve managed to find the SSID, I can’t connect it. always prompt wrong password.

the 5g (radio1) is better. if I fix the channel, restart the router every time I change the configuration (even change password), it usually make the router works.

I think the Device sold in China is different from other area, the default firmware (which supports A1) doesn’t support Chinese A1 hardware, the A2 firmware driver (BCM4366c) supports the Chinese A1 hardware but doesn’t work well since the driver was dated 2017.

with this BCM4366C driver provided in A2 firmware, I can only have 5G fix Channel WPA2 security wifi service, it’s usable, but all other function are not working, not even one.

I opened the router, tried to provide the chip information but the chips are covered by metal jacket and fixed to the mother board. I have manufacture’s original latest firmware, I think the proper driver may be extracted from it but I’m not capable to do it. I can provide the file as requested. Can’t post here, the file is too big.

I was using CLAT in an Archer C7 v5 for some testing. Everything worked fine.

I decided then to upgrade to 19.07.1 and everything works fine from the backup that I did from the config, but not the CLAT (464XLAT).

I decided to reflash the unit from scratch and configure everything manually. Same problem, CLAT is not working. I tried even setting the tunnel link to the WAN interface manually in the CLAT interface (advanced settings), instead of the default “unspecified”, played with the firewall settings as well, etc. Nothing resulted.

By the way, even in 18.06.7, which I’m using right now with the CLAT, the CLAT interface doesn’t report any RX/TX or packets. In the same router I’ve installed Collectd and I can see there the traffic being graphed correctly.

So I’m guessing there is some bug there. I’m going to report it as a bug, but just in case someone discovered an easy solution.

I’ve observed that at some point, across numerous tests, a Virtual dynamic interface 464XLAT was created, but it doesn’t allow to edit it, so not sure if this is related. I believe this interface is only created when I’m using PPPoE for the WAN link (I’ve tested 2 scenarios, PPPoE done in the OpenWRT box and PPPoE done in the GPON ONT).

After an hour or so of usage, the router reboots itself with a corrupted filesystem. I’ve attached the log to this bug report. The log contains:

__nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error

so I think there might be a link with the similar problem that the BT HomeHub Version 5A had a long time ago, as per:

I’m using Linksys wrt3200 as router behind cable modem with a dslite configuration and Devolo 1200+ DinRail connected to one of the LAN ports.

Previuos configuration was provider cable modem connected to Devolo and it was working fine (up to 50-100 mbit up and download to all DLAN devices.

After swiching to Linksys and OpenWRT I noticed that download speed for IPv4 dropped to 2-3 MBit for all devices. Upload and IPv6 work fine.

Thought it was dslite problem but provider router works fine and if I connect to Linksys directly via WLAN the download speed is as expected...

Repatched with Linksys stock firmware without changing anything else stable up and download speeds in expected range for ip4/ip6.

Patched openwrt back - ipv4 download drop to 2Mbit, back to stock back to normal speed...

Assume it’s potentially an MTU setting for LAN interface but all values I tried did not change much...

Would appreciate any help. Would be pity to fall back to stock but if it’s the only option...

Just flashed 19.07.4 on Kingston MLWG2.

Followed online procedure found (copy image to SD card, touch special file, login via telnet on stock firmware, write image, reboot device) to flash OpenWRT.

After flash, device “seems” stuck dead (all leds are on, wired network irresponsive, no WiFi AP detected).

I have opened the device, soldered the serial console pins and accessere via serial console.

Device is actually booting perfectly, but both wired and wifi are not accessible.

1. I have WiFi enabled by setting “disabled = 0” in /etc/config/wireless to OpenWrt AP

2. I have Wired enabled by adding “option iface “eth0”” to the “lan” interface in /etc/config/network

3. Device now works great

Without these two changes, the device is as good as dead.

This is a peculiar device: only 1 ethernet port and 2.4Ghz Wifi. My guess something is wrong in the vlan/bridge/switch settings?

I hope a fix can be commited somehow so that future users do not end up with a dead-like device.

Regression on 1 Gbs Lan, 2.4 and 5GHz clients. If i changed lan port on lan card to 100Mbs FD - no regression оn this client, but i see it on other 1Gbs lan cliens and wireless.

There is no upload speed regression when connected 1Gbs cable into Wan port. There is no probem on stock firmware

Деградация скорости отдачи на проводных гигабитных клиентах и на Wifi ,если в Wan порт подключен 100 мегабитный кабель. Если на конкретном проводном клиенте переключить порт на 100 Мбит полный дуплекс-регрессия на нем пропадает, но сохраняется на Wifi.
Деградация скорости не наблюдается при подключении гигабитного кабеля в Wan порт. На стоке проблемы нет.

I have a VDSL line with Plusnet (UK) - the connection is pppoe - ptm0.101. With the supplied modem/router the line and connection is stable with no disconnects. With LEDE the connection is established and works well until it disconnects (sometimes as early as few minutes other times it stays connected up to an hour). After the disconnect there is no reconnection until a reboot. Restarting wan interface (ifdown wan/ifup wan) or dsl connection (/etc/init.d/dslcontrol stop/start) does not help.

- Device problem occurs on TP-w8970 and BTHomehub 5A (same crash on both lantiq based devices)

It appears this has been broken for quite some time, likely before LEDE forked from OpenWrt, as there are CC builds with initrams images working fine (early 2016), however the CC repo no longer compiles a working initrams image, nor does LEDE.

  • The changes causing the issue appear to have occurred between 2016.02.18 and 2016.09.06
    • I have a working OpenWrt initramfs image created 2016.02.17 @14:26:46 UTC which boots w/o issue.
    • This post from the SolidRun forum on 2016.09.06 @ 10:30am (local) verifies boot issues occurring at least as of this date.
      • Xue Liu’s [clockworkbird9] repo is mentioned and a link to his blog is provided, however he either forked OpenWrt prior to the issue originating or fixed whatever was broken.

Very annoying wifi disconnects when connected to WDS-Repeater.
The AP works no disconnects but when connected to repeater random disconnects repeatedly.
Affected firmware release both LEDE 17.X.X and Openwrt 18.X.X

Note: Checked, WDS works fine on Previous Openwrt Releases(BarrierBreaker, ChaosCalmer) on same settings

Firstly ,I found my ps4 download speed only 100mbps,so I’ve run iperf3
The lan rx work in problem ,tx works no problem.
One pair rx only 18mbps ten pair rx only 100mbps but tx can run in 1gbps.

So I change to offical 18.06.2 banch,rx is 400mbps ,tx is 1Gbps. Still in problem.
After I compile trunk banch ,it also WIP as 18.06 banch.

This problem also mentioned in  FS#1598

am having a problem trying to connect to the WiFi of a D-Link DIR-885L revision A1 with default settings
for the following clients:
Client1: Dell Inspiron 15 5000 running Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
Client2: Sony Xperia XZ3 running Android 10

WPA2 → Unable to retrieve DHCP?
WPA3 → Unable to connect
Connecting both clients to Archer C7 1750 v2 running OpenWrt version 19.07.7 works with both WPA2 & WPA3
Connecting to the WiFi of the router itself works with DD-WRT, as well, as the original firmware, so it should not be a hardware issue.

Here is what I have tried:

Both versions 21.02.0-rc1 and 19.07.7
Various combinations of wpad (openssl and wolfssl)
Strage stuff encountered: Ununtu is showing the incorrect security settings...
When using WPA3 with wpad_basic_wolf_ssl it’s saying the network has no security
When using WPA3 with wpad_basic_open_ssl it’s saying the network has WPA2 security
I have attached logs from both the router and the client in the hopes that someone can understand what the issue is.

i have a Xiaomi Mi Router 3G (gigabyte) router, installed openwrt four years ago from source, it had issue - in lan the network would re-connect once 1-2 secs (dont know about WAN). it was impossible to use, i changed to another firmware, not openwrt

time passed, my lan upgraded to gigabyte cables, i compiled openwrt again, the re-connections were no longer an issue! it was ok.

Then i noticed these re-connections appeared suddenly in vmware in bridge mode.

Then more: if i connect to router, i can even use unmanaged switch (mercusys ms108g) clients with 100Mbit cable, then the device starts having these re-connects again. gigabyte clients don’t have this issue.

Then i noticed that ethernet device it can be with 100Mbit network card, but the cable is gigabyte - the issue also disappears. I thought it is a bug in drivers for a long time.

But today I found one firmware at github, a fork, https://github.com/coolsnowwolf/lede compiled it, installed. Connected device with 100Mbit cable, waited 40 mins, disconnects are missing. in vmware they’re also absent.

Hope this can be fixed in openwrt
The problem is observed on versions: 18.06 - present (21.02), and nightly.

I’m ready to be a tester, provide any logs, and flashing the router in testing the fix.

Boot device, wait for it to crash within 24hours

The paste ending in Hn was recorder after wifi stopped working and i turned wifi off and on.
The paste ending in Wu happend about 30 minutes after that and could only be resolved by rebooting the device.
