Supply the following if possible:

  • Device problem occurs on: Linksys WRT3200 ACM
  • Software versions of OpenWrt 21.02.1
  • Steps to reproduce
    Device is configured as dumb AP.
    When wireless-security is configured as wpa3 the device is not stable.
    Sometimes I can connect over wifi. Sometimes not. From same wifi station (PC running W10 Pro). Tried 2 different pcs (different hw) -- same behavior.
    Sometimes the wifi AP running openwrt 21.02.1 hangs -- the connection thru wired ethernet dies. I am forced to power-cycle the device.

Super-stable when using wpa2. I have been using openwrt since 19.07.7

I believe I can quite easily recreate the problem although I cannot provide a script (defined steps).

Wireless channel in WPA3 mode only does not work at all.
on Linksys WRT3200ACM is not stable in neither AP-mode (as dumb AP) nor as wifi-router. Works a bit, enough for a client to attach but fails immediately. Requires power-cycle to be able to connect thru wired ethernet.
I have stations w/ support for wpa3. None is working

Super-stable in WPA2 mode

======How to recreate problem======
Configure as wpa3 only.
Connect over radio
WIll fail within 60s.
Sometimes the client cannot connect.
Sometimes the client can connect briefly.
Always? the wifi-box hangs & requires a power-cycle to get going again

======Same behaviour in mixed wpa3/wpa2-mode======
See above for how to recreate problem.
Am I the first one to try wpa3 on Linksys WRT3200AM??

No.
But there is no news in your bug. WPA3 on WRT3200ACM is known to fail.

Forum is full of threads discussing that.
https://forum.openwrt.org/search?q=wrt3200acm%20wpa3

One of the main reasons is the broken 802.11w (PMF) support.
See upstream
https://github.com/kaloz/mwlwifi/search?q=802.11w&type=issues

And the development of the mwlwifi driver and the closed-source firmware blob has been stopped by the manufacturer, so there is not much hope of improvement...

Thanks for the update!
I have been using Linksys (w/o Openwrt) for a long time because its position v open source. When I decided to go open source on my wifi-"boxes" I did this minimal check (ie google) where Linksys WRT3200ACM came out on top or close to. Hence I decided to standardized on WRT3200ACM. Really hard to find what support are missing for a particular box. The Openwrt community ought to identify a few vital characteristics & state support for those per "box". Maybe I can help here. This summary could also help an eager user to select the "right" box. (Do you have insight into what is the "best" box today?)

One ought also make it visible for Linksys their closed source is a blocker for successful use of wpa3 on their boxes. Linksys used to be outspoken on their positition v open source. If you cannot get wpa3 going on certain Linksys boxes they ought not to be at top in (shallow) articles.

======A possible next step======
Maybe I am slily but have someone tried to work Linksys, Belkin or Marwell?
I scouted a bit in my networks. I have no close contacts to Linksys, I have some at Belkin and Marwell both in Sweden and in CA, US.
I have absolutely no clue if there is any possibility to get them to fix the driver or make it open source.
What do you think?
Is it worth a try?
