Hello there,
I just upgraded my perfectly working TP-Link TL-WDR4900 v1 from LEDE 17 to the latest OpenWRT firmware available: 19.07.03

Unfortunately now, some WiFi 2.4GHz clients got stuck on wifi, they cannot even ping the router, the only way to fix it is to manually disconnect and reconnect them.

This is the log from the router in that specific moment:
May 30 22:26:01 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 static
May 30 22:26:11 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 dynamic
May 30 22:38:59 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 static
May 30 22:38:59 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 dynamic
May 30 22:39:03 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 static
May 30 22:39:04 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 dynamic
May 30 22:39:12 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 static
May 30 22:39:13 Router hostapd: wlan1: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED 83:20:75:40:f3:a0 dynamic

In order to reproduce the bug I have just to increase the traffic (download a big file on wifi)

Hello,

This issue is preproducing for me as well, so I thought I'll add my deployment details in case it might help with the bug investigation.

I'm running OpenWrt 19.07.3 r11063-85e04e9f46 on a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v2 with the following hostapd package installed:
Package: hostapd-common
Version: 2019-08-08-ca8c2bd2-4
Architecture: mips_24kc

I see the following logs repeating before my WiFi crashes (radio stops broadcasting):
daemon.notice hostapd: wlan0: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED device static
daemon.notice hostapd: wlan0: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED device off
The device is an Android 10 smartphone.

Hope this helps!

Yep, im getting the same issue. Upgraded from 18.06 to 19.07.7, as soon as that happened my android phone is going crazy Static, off, Static, off...every second my log is FLOODED.
This wasnt the case with 18.06.

To reproduce, the phone simply has to connect.

Can this be looked at please? or a reason as to why this is happening now after upgrade?

Issue is still happening with OpenWrt 21.02.2 r16495-bf0c965af0
Package: hostapd-common
Version: 2020-06-08-5a8b3662-39
Architecture: ipq806x

Also happening on my two APs

  • Xiaomi AX3200 (mt7622), SNAPSHOT r18811-78a9bee50b / LuCI Master git-22.046.84457-2178444
  • Xiaomi Mi Router 3G (mt7621) (OpenWrt 21.02.1)

The only clients affected are Android Smartphones. My notebooks with Intel Wireless 8265 and Intel AX200 do not have issues at all.

The only way to solve the issue is by power cycle the affected access point. Then it continues to work for a few days.

Also happening on my Xiaomi AX3600.

daemon.notice hostapd: wlan2: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx off
daemon.notice hostapd: wlan2: STA-OPMODE-SMPS-MODE-CHANGED xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx static

But it just happens with one specific android phone on the 2.4 wifi... all other phones and tablets on either 2.4 or 5G wifi are ok.
Even this specific phone on 5G wifi is ok... just happen on 2.4.

Also had a similar problem with another wifi client constantly trying and failing to connect... also flooded the log and crashed wifi... had to use mac-filter to stop it.
daemon.notice hostapd: wlan2-1: STA xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx IEEE 802.11: did not acknowledge authentication response

Same with OpenWrt 23.05.2 r23630-842932a63d, Netgear WAX206 and Intel AX201 as Client device. Only way is to disable SMPS in driver setting. Any ideas what is causing this....a very common issue.
