attempt to boot from GPT device producing (which would be logical if u-boot does not understand the partition layout in the first place) ** Unrecognized filesystem type **
MBR appears nowadays often being referred to as legacy partition table, also being less secure and less capable in comparison to GPT and thus this feature suggestion.

Whilst source provides GPT support (probably since around 2012) it seems to be lacking downstream however, indicated by:

according to source doc https://github.com/u-boot/u-boot/blob/d0d07ba86afc8074d79e436b1ba4478fa0f0c1b5/doc/README.gpt there would be a cli gpt command in u-boot, which however when executed producing:
Unknown command 'gpt'

If I had coding abilities I would have certainly produced a PR instead of opening this task. Just got as far as discovering the build conf for u-boot https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=blob;f=package/boot/uboot-mvebu/Makefile;hb=552c48ea4375420cf3db1f91038a3f4eca47361b but then getting lost, also when trying to compare to source code.
