backup-command:
-b | --create-backup
create .tar.gz of files specified in sysupgrade.conf
then exit. Does not flash an image. If file is '-',
i.e. stdout, verbosity is set to 0 (i.e. quiet).
-r | --restore-backup
restore a .tar.gz created with sysupgrade -b
then exit. Does not flash an image. If file is '-',
the archive is read from stdin.
-l | --list-backup
list the files that would be backed up when calling
sysupgrade -b. Does not create a backup file.

It looks like you hit a corner case not covered by one of our OpenWrt specific functions.

The issue happens with the last development Snapshot builds of 24-04-2018, while the last stable release (17.01.4) it works fine.

It might be that I suspect the wrong issue here. But if it's what I'm thinking about it, should fail the very same way with 17.01.4 and all earlier releases.

Anyway, would you please test if your issue is fixed with the image uploaded to https://www.kresin.me/files/mikrotik/.

If you prefer to build an image on your own, I've committed the supposed fix to [[https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/staging/mkresin.git|my staging tree]].

mkresin:

But if it's what I'm thinking about it, should fail the very same way with 17.01.4 and all earlier releases.

After thinking more about the fact that it works with 17.01.4 and fails with the current snapshots, I can thing of another issue that might be introduced.

The ubi auto attach code doesn't check for the UBI magic if an error occurred while reading from flash. Instead it will skip the UBI magic check and goes straight to the code that tries to (auto)mount the ubi partition.

Since your board has a bad block right at the beginning of the ubi partition ([ 0.904724] Bad eraseblock 32 at 0x000000400000), it is expected that an error occurs during reading and ubi magic check is skipped.

If for some reason this error code isn't returned, the code will jump into the ubi magic check and fail, as there is no (or garbage) data read from flash which will not have the ubi magic for sure.

Depending on what really is wrong, my changes are able to workaround the real issue or doesn't change anything and you will still see the error.

mkresin:

I have the same/similar problem on Mikrotik RB450G with openwrt-18.06-rc2

No, you have a complete different issue. Your board has a MLC NAND flash and UBI isn't supported on MLC NAND. Following https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/448581/linux-alternative-to-ubifs-on-mlc-nand it doesn't look that good for your board.
