WZR-600DHP with OpenWrt (Attitude Adjustment) allowed me to set htmode per-SSID. Furthermore, this seems to have worked, since my Nexus 5X (which doesn't work with HT40 on any channel other than 3) connected to my HT20 SSID, but failed to connect to my HT40 SSID.

LEDE (Reboot / 17.01.2) seems to have moved htmode to a radio-specific option instead, so I have lost this functionality.

Are you sure that it ever worked correctly with OpenWrt AA and wasn't as easy that the last set value was applied?

Reading the hostapd documentation it rather looks like a per wireless interface setting instead of a per BSSID setting.

I'm not 100% sure, but as mentioned, what I observed indicates the two SSIDs were getting different behaviour, and the behaviour matches what I would expect from HT20 vs HT40.
